"fantastic place to stay"
Our recent 10 day visit to Casa La Trocha and Comares has been a truly peaceful and relaxing experience. The villa is absolutely gorgeous and the attention to detail in the way it has been furnished is exquisite – it really is a home from home, and we found everything we needed for the perfect holiday. The scenery is breathtaking and the quiet tranquillity of the location lends itself to a completely chilled out holiday.
Our hosts, David and Jacqui were on hand to guide us in from the airport and made us feel very welcome on our arrival. David and Jacqui are great hosts and were on hand during our stay to help with any queries we had.
The villa was spotlessly clean and a little welcome pack including a bottle of wine and some beers had been left for us – with thanks. The style of the villa is traditionally Moorish and the standard of decoration far superior to that expected of a holiday let. The villa has a pool which is cleaned out weekly by a local man who very kindly arrived with a basket of freshly picked figs and plums for us. Although there are other properties quite close by, Casa La Trocha provides a reasonable degree of privacy and the surrounding area is very quiet.
The town of Comares is perched on the top of the mountain, and although we had hired a car we venture to walk up there one evening. Definitely not a climb for the fainthearted or one we would recommend for the slightly tubby over 50s category – which we are!! The path is very loose rubble much of the way uphill and it took us a good 40 minutes- including several stops along the way to gather breath and admire the far reaching landscape below us, but boy were we ready for the first cold beer of the evening once we arrived in Comares and what an amazing little town it is! Well worth all the effort, but a journey probably best made in a car unless you are serious hikers. (It is worth mentioning here that Jose, the local taxi driver lives just 500 metres from the villa and his prices are very reasonable if you fancy an evening out without the car).
Although the kitchen in the villa has just about every appliance and utensil you could possibly require, we found it far more enjoyable to cook fresh fish and meat on the outside barbeque and relax and enjoy our surroundings. There is a huge supermarket called Eroski just as you come off the motorway from Malaga at junction 272 that can supply you with everything you could possible need – the fresh fish counter being exceptionally good! In addition, there is a very good supermarket in Benamargosa (about 15 minutes drive away from the villa) which proved very handy to top up supplies at. It is not a 24/7, but David and Jacqui will point you in the right direction.
We ate out a couple of times. The little bar on the square at Comares made us a lovely supper for less than 10 euros and on our last night after packing our suitcases we decided to eat out at Bar Andalucía in Benamargosa. It is a small local bar with a good selec tion of tapas and in our very limited vocabulary of Spanish ordered a selec tion to try. After munching our way through two heaving platters and whilst in the process of congratulating each other on this triumph, a further two huge platters arrived – much to the amusement of the locals and the waiter serving us! We could have fed the entire bar with our supper, but the entire cost – including drinks was less than 30 euros.
You will need to hire a car to get about. We chose to hire from Brunos because they offer a completely all inclusive package with no hidden charges on arrival. Our Nissan Micra coped admirably with the inclines, but if you intend to do a lot of drive much further afield, you may be well served to choose something a little sturdier. However, a word of caution if hiring a car. Speeding cameras are not as visible as those in the UK as we found whilst driving back to Malaga airport, and a 50 euro on the spot fine might have been avoided had we known. However, the police officer was most apologetic and charming, and by paying the fine on the spot avoids penalty points – so not all bad news!
We thoroughly enjoyed our 10 days at Casa La Trocha and would highly recommend it to anyone seeking total relaxation in a serene and beautiful part of Spain. We hope to return one day and thank David and Jacqui for a lovely break and for making us so very welcome.
