The property is located in Ventnor, South-West of the Isle of Wight. If you are travelling by car, you are likely to cross the Solent (the straight between the mainland and the Isle of Wight) by boarding either at Portsmouth (www.wightlink.co.uk ) or Southampton (www.redfunnel.co.uk). Please make sure to select a car ferry as there are passenger only options as well.
If you are coming on foot (without a car), there are three main options available:
1. Take a ferry from Portsmouth to Ryde. (in case you need to get to Portsouth first, there is a convenient bus service as well as a train terminal bringing you essentially to the boarding point). You will arrive to the Ryde Pier Head. From there, it is advisable (especially if you have a travel card or a rail season card) to take a train to Shanklin (last stop) and take a bus #3 (or a taxi) towards Ventnor from there. Alternatively, you can take the bus #3 to Ventnor from Ryde. If you do so, you will need to walk on the Ryde esplanade which is very enjoyable if the weather is nice and you don’t have much luggage. If you have taken bus #3, it is advised to get off wither at the Holy Trinity Church or the Ventnor Library bus stop.
There is also an option to take a taxi from the Pier Head which is advisable for larger groups.
2. Take a hovercraft from Southsea. Southsea is just a few hundred meters away from the Portsmouth Terminal and there is a local bus. Hovercraft may (depending on the promotions) be a bit more expensive than the ferry but (i) it is an interesting experience; (ii) it is faster and (iii) you get directly to Ryde. Once in Ryde, you can take either train to Shanklin and bus 3 or bus #3 right away.
3. Take a ferry from Southampton to Cowes. Depending on the time pressure and whether, you may consider taking either a fast passenger or slower car and passenger ferry to Cowes. Once in Cowes, you can take a taxi or take one of the busses to Newport changing it for bus #3 to get to Ventnor. There is also an option to take bus #6 but (i) it tends to operate with larger intervals and (ii) it is likely to take longer to get to Ventnor.
4. If you have an option to travel by a helicopter, you may want to contact the Ventnor Towers Hotel and enquire about the availability and costs of using their helicopter pad.
Money saving tips
Note 1: If you are traveling by bus, please consider buying 24- 48 hr or 1 week tickets. This may be considerably cheaper than buying individual tickets.
Note 2: Students are eligible for a 50% discount on the bus service. Other travellers may also qualify for discounts, please check. Ferry companies offer student discounts as well
Note 3. If you are travelling by train, especially through Southampton, please consider buying a ticket to Cowes or another railway station on the Isle of Wight. This may be cheaper than buying an individual ferry ticket. In fact, at the present time, one can save by buying a train ticket from Southampton to Cowes, even if one arrived to Southampton by bus etc.
