Tenerife boasts some of the most beautiful beaches and unique volcanic landscapes in the Canary Islands. As the largest of the Canaries, it offers everything you'd expect from a holiday, and even more, all year round. There are plenty of bars and restaurants for every taste and pocket; riveting zoos and thrilling water parks all over the island. In the summer months of July and August highs are typically just under 30 degrees Celsius. Even in winter you’re unlikely to get much more than 5 or 6 rainy days a month and temperatures rarely drop below 20 degrees Celsius.
The most popular resorts in Tenerife are in the southern part of the island which is served by Tenerife South airport. Flights from the UK to South Tenerife usually take between 4 and 5 hours. Tenerife North is also an international airport and flights from this airport connect the island to some Spanish cities and the rest of the Canary Islands, but most international flights go from and to the south airport. There is also a ferry line between Santa Cruz and Huelva.
Tenerife's western and eastern coasts are quiet and traditional. Peaceful towns and villages are fringed with dark sand and pebbly beaches. On the other hand, southern parts and the island's capital, Santa Cruz in the north east, are a bit livelier. The two main holiday resorts are in Tenerife South – lined along the Costa Adeje: Playa de las Americas is a lively tourist hot spot with plenty of bars and restaurants that stay open till the small hours while Los Cristianos is a little laid back, suitable for families and children. Puerto de la Cruz, on Tenerife’s northern coast, is also quiet and famous for its wide beaches. It is a proper working town and, unlike some of the island's purpose built resorts, has a more authentic feel. The Costa del Silencio separates the adjacent Golf del Sur resort from the vibrant resorts in the south. Well-kept golf courses, pebbly beaches and fine restaurants put this resort on the map.
Beaches Fanabe, El Duque and La Tejita in Tenerife South are favourites with tourists, and rightly so given their size, amenities and accessibility. However, there are a few more on the island that are a bit out-of-the-way, but still gems. Playa de Martianez is a well-known beach, almost in the centre of Puerto de la Cruz. But just a short walk east is one of the most beautiful dark sand beaches in the world – El Bollullo. There is a 550 metres long walk – mostly steps – to reach its sands from the car park, but it's certainly worth it. You've probably heard of Playa de Las Teresitas and its wide stretch of sand in North Tenerife. But further to the north, another wonderful beach lies – Las Gaviotas beach. It's fourteen kilometres from Santa Cruz and walking there is not an option for most tourists, so it's often overlooked. What makes up for it is that dogs are allowed, the great beach bar with delicious Canarian snack foods, and the variety of water sports available.
Due to its pleasant average temperatures and varied landscapes, Tenerife is a superb destination for golf holidays. With Abama Golf, Golf Costa Adeje and Amarilla Golf, there is no doubt the south holds some excellent golf courses. However, the north does too. Buenavista Golf is an 18 hole course. It lies on the northwestern coast between the Atlantic and Teno mountains, bringing about spectacular views. Another top-notch golf course in Tenerife with great views is Real Club, in the northern part next to the airport. It is gradually elevated to 300m and it's the oldest golf course on the island.
Apart from beaches, water parks, zoos and a variety of amenities available, Tenerife also takes great pride in its historical and natural heritage. Teide National Park is a World Heritage Site around Mount Teide - the highest peak in Spain and one of the highest volcanoes in Europe - definitely worth seeing. Covering around 2,000 km2 the island is relatively small, but due to its environmental conditions it is home to a great biological diversity. Hundreds of species of plants and animals live on the island, from Malpais de Rasca nature reserve in the south to Anaga Rural Park in the north. It's a true dreamland for hikers, climbers and mountain bikers. There is a blend of modern and historic architecture on the island – something for culture vultures to admire. The Auditorio de Tenerife in Santa Cruz is a feat of contemporary architecture, whilst the Church of the Conception of La Laguna in San Cristobal is a historic treasure.
Kids adore the beach, and with the choice of water sports in Tenerife, little scamps should be bubbling with happiness. If they grow tired of the beach, it's a good thing the island offers an abundance of activities. The water park Siam Park in Costa Adeje seems to be irresistible to children and, occasionally, to grown-ups as well. It's full of fun attractions, from relaxing rides down the Mai Thai River to adrenaline boosting water slides. Parque Maritimo in Santa Cruz has three salt water pools with gentle slopes making it perfect for toddlers and preschoolers. The animal adventure park Loro Park in Puerto de la Cruz offers excellent animal diversity and an encounter zone, and there are lots of places to eat and drink.
Tenerife public transport is reliable and inexpensive. On top of that, purchasing a prepaid BONO bus card can save you up to 50% compared to regular ticket prices and the card can be shared between people. Taxis are also reliable, and they're on every corner. Approximately, transfers from Tenerife South airport to Playa de las Americas or Los Cristianos resorts cost between 25 and 30 Euros. Night fares, which are between 22:00 and 06:00, are a bit pricier. Also, Tenerife motorway TF-5 encircles almost the entire island and car hire is always an option. But most resorts in Tenerife have amenities nearby, so unless you're planning day trips, there is really no need. Some of our owners and agents organise transport from the airport to the property and vice versa. It might be worth inquiring about transfer fares with your owner or agent at Clickstay.
The choice of restaurants on the island is broad, offering all kinds of dishes that suit every pocket, from posh restaurants to mall fast food spots. On one hand, kids love fast food and you can never go wrong with McDonald’s. There are also plenty of traditional Canarian fast food joints in every resort for a cheap and cheerful meal. They’re fresh, simple and delicious. On the other hand, there are also many upscale restaurants in Tenerife including Michelin-starred ones: glossy interiors, divine food and stiff-backed waiters gliding through the dining halls. However when it comes to tasty and traditional food, La Ola restaurant, way up north, takes the cake. Portions are plentiful, food amazing and prices affordable.
In a race to see which resort has the best nightlife, Los Cristianos and Playa de las Americas win by a nose. They’re closely followed by Santa Cruz, and behind - breathless - in the distance, Puerto de la Cruz follows. Dance the night away to music by household names of the international electronic dance scene in clubs like Papagayo and Magic Lounge Club in Playa de las Americas. Sip a mojito in Los Cristiano’s Casablanca. Then again, if you’d rather chill out, try Paseo 24 Lonunge Cafe in El Medano. There are also a lot of clubs and bars with live acts on stage, cabarets, and even karaoke. So if you believe you’re a keen singer and don’t mind showing it, head to Route 66 bar in Puerto de Santiago and grab the mic.
Tenerife is great for shopping. And whether you’re looking for fresh fruits and vegetables or expensive watches and mobile phones, Tenerife’s got you covered. Try Adeje or Arona markets for fresh produce. Fresh produce is also available in the Market of Our Lady of Africa in Santa Cruz. If you want to do some clothes shopping, try Centro Comercial Meridiano, also in Santa Cruz. It is home to the only Primark on the island. There are numerous malls in Tenerife, but since Siam mall opened, the rest has been somewhat cast aside. All the big brands are in the mall, and there are several decent places to eat here as well with great food, service and prices.
